Iso Aperture Shutter Speed - Aperture and depth of field are used by nature and landscape photographers to emphasis the subject of their photos. Aperture is the opening created in the middle of the lens by the iris diaphragm. Basically the diaphragm is like a faucet. Open it wide, you let in a large steam of light. If you shut it down, you let in a small stream of light. By varying the aperture you control the light passing through the lens. The aperture size is indicated by an f-number such as f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, and f/16. These settings are called f-stops.

When you change the lens aperture you change the focus or depth of field. The depth of field is simply what is in reasonably sharp focus. The smaller the aperture (the higher the f-number) the greater the depth of field, meaning more of the photo is in focus. The larger the aperture (the lower the f-number) the shallower the depth of field, meaning more of the photo is out of focus.

Another concept of depth of field is the farther away you focus, the greater the depth of field. When shooting sunsets or landscape photos you will want a smaller aperture and focus farther away keeping everything in focus. When shooting photos of closer subjects you may want to use alarger aperture and focus closer to reduce the depth of field.

Try to shoot more photos of nature and landscapes using different Iso Aperture Shutter Speed settings and note what happens to the depth of field. Changing the shutter speed will also allow you to vary the aperture to achieve the depth of field you desire. You can tremendously change the focus and composition of your nature and landscape photos by using aperture and depth of field.
