If possible, obtain a correct reading with a built-in light meter by taking the reading about six to eight inches away from your intended subject, then move back to where you want to shoot the photo. If your camera has automatic exposure with a locking feature move in for a reading then lock it before moving back to shoot the photo. Do the same with a hand-held light meter.
A reading taken from farther away from the photo’s subject causes the light meter to read sky, background, and other factors that will cause the light meter to average the entire scene throwing the off the correct exposure for your photo’s subject. The light meter is a mechanical device, it can not think or know what you want it to specifically read. You must know how to use the light meter to get the desired results. If you are not able to take a reading close up such as with landscapes and sunsets bracket your shots. Shoot one f-stop over and one f-stop under what the light meter reads. Wasting a few frames is worth finding the right exposure for that perfect photo.
The question is do you want to use a built-in or a separate light meter. I have always relied on my built-in light meter, but a lot of professionals prefer a hand-held light meter for a multitude of reasons. Select a light meter that works best for you. The key is to shoot more photos of nature and landscapes with the correct exposure by learning how to properly use your light meter.
