, Sears Tower or Empire State Building as the greatest
achievement of modern skyscraper design, Flatiron Building, New York’s modest twenty story building, which was
built in a section of the city considered «uptown», at the turn
of the century, holds the merit of having starting it all. The Flatiron
Building is one of the greatest historic landmarks in NY. The iconic
building with 21 stories, best known for its triangular shape, was one of
the early remarkable skyscrapers that have come to define NY. Burnham, the Flatiron
Building follows the triangular plot of land marking the intersection of East
23rd Street.
The building rapidly became a mark of the skyscraper era and
it has been considered as the nation’s first true skyscraper. Despite the
far taller structures that were later developed, having survived the destroying ball and modernization
of the Fifth Avenue /Broadway section of the city, the building remains one of the few remaining examples
of early 20th century expertise, and the impeccable example of early 1900′s
architectural design. The Flatiron Building was designed as a steel-frame
high-rise structure clad in white terra-cotta. At 93 meters , it was one of the tallest buildings in the city.
